These are three of the four hatched goslings a friend incubated for us from our own goose eggs. The mother goose layed far too many eggs, (over 2 dozen !) so we took some away and gave them to people we know with incubators. These three are the first results, less than 24 hours out of the egg . T he fourth was given to another friend to raise. We have another incubator batch expected to hatch soon, and we have heard peeps from under momma goose too, so the ones she’s setting on are starting to hatch as well. We also have a second goose laying in a second nest, she has not started sitting yet, but expect she will start soon. The chicks are not sure what to make of the giant, but still barely mobile goslings.

They’re pretty prolific, but 12-16 is more normal.

Chickens are nice. Get a fun breed like Brahmas. They’re big, fuzzy-footed fluff balls, and if you socialize them well they’re lap chickens. They’re decent layers, and with hens weighing up to 8-10 lbs, good meaty birds too. If you just want pets and you don’t have predator problems, Po lish tufted, or various silkies are calm, good natured birds that accept being handled by children, and won’t go too crazy on your gardens, or roam the neighborhood... Polish have very poor eyesight (due to the tufts b locking their eyes) and can be easy picking for predators. Silkies are just not super good at survival without the help of people, they are also not very water or cold resistant, but they tend to be sweet and even tempered.

While I’d like to have a nice roasted chicken, the rest of the family wants pets/eggs. The winters here get pretty cold. I know we have some foxes around and supposedly there are fishercats. I was expecting to mostly keep  them in a pen but I really have no idea what I have to do

This is a fine starting point for beginners... Good basic advice and care, but it can get a touch precious.
